The Macedonian Wars were four large-scale clashes between the Roman Republic and Macedonia that resulted in Rome's domination of the Balkans. The first war was started by Philip V, king of Macedonia. Having concluded an alliance with Carthage in 215 BC, after Hannibal's victory at Cannae, he attempted to seize Illyria, a region in the northwestern Balkans. The Romans, however, succeeded in provoking a war against Macedonia by an alliance of Aetolian states. As a result, Philip was unable to either seize Illyria or help the Carthaginians in Italy. The second Roman-Macedonian war was started in 200 BC already by the Romans. Philip's troops were defeated at the Battle of Kinoskefalas in 197 BC. At the same time a peace was concluded, according to which Macedonia gave Rome the vast majority of its fleet, pledged to reduce the size of the army to 5 thousand people and not to wage wars against Roman allies.
These events are the subject of the next book in the series.
