The history of the French kingdom from the accession of Francis II to the death of Charles IX corresponds to the initial stage of the armed conflict between French Catholics and Protestants, known as the Wars of Religion. The large-scale confrontation, which lasted almost forty years, divided France religiously and politically, putting it on the brink of a national catastrophe. At this stage, the Huguenots, who were in the minority, were convinced that they would be able to convert all of France to their faith and establish a just world order. To do this, it was necessary to have power over the king and the court in order to free the young monarchs, Francis II and Charles IX in turn, from the negative influence of the entourage that ruled for them. But as soon as this Huguenot idea began to be implemented, the opposing party, led by the Dukes of Guise-Lorraine, organized an assassination attempt on the leader of the Protestants, Admiral Coligny, which led to the brutal and bloody culmination of the confrontation - St. Bartholomew's Day.
