The work of the renowned German sociologist Niklas Luhmann (1927–1998) demonstrates how the author's general theory of self-referential autopoietic systems can be applied to the analysis of one of the functionally differentiated systems of modern society—namely, the system of upbringing and education. This interpretation of upbringing occupies a middle ground between Luhmann's first address to this topic in his book "Problems of Reflection in the System of Upbringing" (1979), co-authored with K. E. Schorr, and his final work, "The Educational System of Society" (2002).
The book will be useful to sociologists, educators, and anyone interested in the various applications of systems theory and the history and theory of pedagogy.
