Kate Douglas Wiggin (1859-1823) was an American novelist, author of novels, the most famous of which was "Rebecca of Sunny Creek Farm", written in 1903. The book was enthusiastically received by readers and critics, translated into foreign languages and was the basis of a theatrical production, which was also a huge success. In American schools created clubs named after Kate Wiggin, in which the writer read excerpts from her works, in recognition of her awarded a doctorate in literature. The story is printed in a wonderful translation by Marina Batischeva with illustrations by contemporary artist Anna Petrova, made especially for this edition.
Rebecca was born on a farm in a large and very poor family. She was taken in by her mother's older sisters. Rebecca was a kind and capable girl, but her absent-mindedness and rash actions horrified Aunt Miranda. Passionate about composing poetry, she soiled her dress with paint; when the neighborhood children decided to sell soap to buy a lamp, she zealously took to help them and became famous throughout the district; she invited a family of missionaries to the house of her aunts without asking ... But people saw the kindness and responsiveness of Rebecca and loved her, and in the end even Aunt Miranda had to admit that she grew up a good person. For elementary school age children.
