Isai Kalashnikov, a native of a Buryat village, populated by old Believers - Semeisky after the church reform of the XVIII century, became known throughout the country after the publication of his epic novel "The Cruel Age" (1978), which tells about the life of Genghis Khan. In his other novel, "Razryv-grass" (1970), the writer also turns to history, but to a history closer and more personal. In the center of the narrative life Old Believer Semeiskogo village in the first half of XX century - forty years, equal to the number of shocks that fell on the share of contemporaries, the whole era. The same theme is raised in Isaiah Kalashnikov's last novel, first published after his death in 1999 - and again the writer skillfully draws the reader into the vicissitudes of his characters' lives, proving that there are no big and small themes in history, that the measure of everything is a man and his place in the world.
