This collection consists of two works by Archimandrite John Krestyankin (1910–2006). The main themes of “Reflections on the Immortal Soul” are: the origin of human souls; the nature and purpose of the soul; the creation and union of soul and body; the nature of sin in the human soul; the spirit is the highest part of the human soul; the immortality and eternal bliss of the soul. Father John supports his reflections on the soul with extensive excerpts from the works of the Holy Fathers and the works of Russian ascetics of piety. He says that “caring for the soul should be a lifelong labor for each of us.” “An Experience in Constructing Confession” presents two cycles of conversations by the elder. The first cycle is on the ten commandments of God; the second cycle is on the nine commandments of bliss. This work teaches how to carefully and thoroughly prepare for the sacrament of confession. Father John presents serious questions in an accessible form and at the same time clearly and multifacetedly.
