"Stories collected in Uji ("Uji shui monogatari") - a work of medieval Japanese literature, belongs to the genre of setsuwa ("literature of oral stories"), which in its time enjoyed great popularity. The time of composition of the monument is not quite clear - it came down to us in late lists (the only complete list is dated 1695). It is assumed that the original text was put on paper in the early XIII century. "Stories Collected in Uji" consists of 197 stories in fifteen scrolls: here are legends and parables, hagiographies and legends, anecdotes and fairy tales. Many stories from the Uji shui monogatari formed the basis for later Japanese writers, such as the short stories "The Nose" and "Batata Porridge" by Akutagawa Ryunosuke.
The book is provided with detailed comments and illustrations.
It is published in Russian for the first time.
