"Tales of Painting" is a kind of self-portrait in 25 paintings: towards the very end of his life, Daniel Arasse gave a series of lectures on France Culture radio, where he summed up his method and his thoughts in an extremely accessible form. For Arasse, art history is not only a scientific discipline, but also a subject of ardent admiration and intense emotions. In front of any work, be it the "Mona Lisa" or a work by a little-known mannerist, he finds himself in the position of an unbiased but extremely attentive viewer, capable of entering into a dialogue with the artist and drawing conclusions about the author's worldview from any detail. For Arasse himself, these lectures became a confrontation with both his imminent death and the very idea of a "measured term."
