At the dawn of the XX century, the name of Arkady Timofeyevich Averchenko (1880 - 1925) rattled all over the country. His books were known to both old and young, they were read in coupes and horse-drawn carriages, on boulevard benches and at café tables. Alive as life, in them pulsed and rang Russia itself - passing, unimagined - on the eve of the evil twilight. It was a genuine Russian laughter - not the laughter of Mark Twain, O. Henry, Jerome K. Jerome - but an authentic Russian laughter, after Gogol, Saltykov-Shchedrin and Chekhov, the last laugh of the passing epoch. And so tangible, so natural, so juicy was represented Russia in these sparkling humor stories that it is no accident that the flywheel of the revolution of 1917 with its immense sacrifices "in the name of a bright future" put an end to carefree fun and prompted to put Averchenko's books into oblivion for many decades, and their creator sent into lifelong exile. But even Lenin called them "bright to the point of astonishment" and recognized in their author "high talent". In the humor of Averchenko there is no trace of old-fashionedness. In his texts pours the colors of the new era and as if before our eyes cheerful cavalcade burst one after another into Russian everyday life roller skates, cinematography, artists-"neo-innovators", the first electric streetcars ....
In recent years, the legacy of Averchenko began to return to the domestic reader. But only now, after many years of textual efforts, there is finally an opportunity to publish a volume of the best works of one of the greatest Russian humorists as the author himself intended them.
The first book of the two-volume set includes three collections of "Stories (humorous)", the second - a collection of "Merry Oysters", as well as memoirs and responses of famous contemporaries and critics of the writer. Of particular interest is the scientific apparatus of the edition, prepared by D.D. Nikolaev - a leading expert on the works of Averchenko.
