Distracted Attention: How We View Art and Performance Today

Claire Bishop (b. 1971) is a British art historian, curator, and professor of art history at the City University of New York. Her research interests include performance, installation, and “radical museology” as the main media of contemporary art. Continuing her reflections in these areas, she turns to the experience of the viewer, whose attention is today simultaneously fought for by complex art, an incessant flow of information, and the multitasking of modern life. The perception of performances that do not require a fixed point of view, take place at different sites, last for days or, conversely, only a couple of minutes, installations with an immense amount of archival material, etc., is mixed with messages in instant messengers, notifications, photography and video shooting for social networks, online and offline discussions of what is happening. Instead of dissatisfaction with the “inability to concentrate,” Bishop suggests accepting these conditions as a fact and rethinking a new form of scattered viewer attention.
