Vladimir Ivanovich Semyonov's clear, chronological diary entries, crafted with the literary talent of Vladimir Ivanovich Semyonov, document the tragic events of the navy during the Russo-Japanese War. They were translated into nine languages during the author's lifetime. However, they were condemned in Russia and have not been reprinted since the Tsarist era, although they were included in scholarly works and textbooks without acknowledgment of the author.

Only a century later are they gradually returning to readers.

Captain Second Rank V.I. Semyonov was the only officer of the Russian Imperial Navy who served in both the First and Second Pacific Squadrons during the Russo-Japanese War and participated in both major naval battles—Port Arthur and Tsushima. During his final battle on the flagship of the Russian squadron, Semyonov was wounded five times. He survived only a short time after returning from Japanese captivity, but managed to expand and revise the diaries he kept during the fighting. He also wrote other literary works, which interested readers can now continue to explore.

Despite the historical significance of the "Payback" trilogy, the book is a captivating work of fiction, recommended for middle and high school students.
