In each of the book's essays, curator and researcher Yegor Sennikov plucks the fates of individual people from the flow of history: from the once-all-powerful Leon Trotsky to the White Guard pilot Vsevolod Marchenko, who died in the Spanish Civil War; from Vera Mukhina, the creator of "Worker and Kolkhoz Woman," to the poet Irina Odoyevtseva, who returned to the USSR after 65 years. He snatches them up to capture them in a flash, to tell in a couple of pages how the 20th century treated them, and then move on. Politicians, poets, and artists, award winners and émigrés, refugees and returnees—all of them navigated tangled paths, sometimes chosen, sometimes accepted, resigned to the inevitable. A choppy, fast-paced book, where disparate fragments coalesce into a portrait of a harsh time, somewhat reminiscent of today.
