The institution of the state, as it exists today, possesses a number of properties we take for granted. The state is a corporation in the original sense of the word—it possesses its own legal personality, distinct from the rulers; it includes a government apparatus and a body of citizens (subjects), but is distinct from both; it has clearly defined borders and exists only upon recognition by other states, and so on. However, this type of institution is a relatively recent development in human history, and there is no reason to consider it eternal. Renowned Israeli historian and military theorist Martin van Creveld describes the emergence, maturation, and rise of the corporate state. A significant portion of the book is devoted to the crisis of this institution, unfolding before our eyes. The cause lies in the state's loss of legitimacy due to its inability to fulfill its obligations to maintain law and order, protect against external threats, and provide the population with "social benefits." The decline of the state could, in the foreseeable future, lead to a radical transformation of the entire modern world.
