Despite the fact that Joseph Brodsky today remains one of the most relevant and popular poets, many features of his work and individual texts remain not fully explored. The book by Andrei Ranchin is devoted to the analysis of poetics and interpretation of Brodsky’s work.
The first part consists of works in which the literary critic considers the philosophical basis of the author’s poetry “Parts of Speech” and “Urania” – continuity in relation to Platonism and Neoplatonism, the dependence of poetic motifs on existentialism and the interpretation of history. Ranchin also explores in Brodsky’s texts the image of the lyrical “I”, the Akhmatian trace, the features of the poetic idiolect and the images of St. Petersburg and Venice.
The second part includes articles devoted to the analysis and interpretation of the darkest and most mysterious works of I. Brodsky, from the poem “The Procession” to the poem “I always said that fate is a game...”
The third part contains reviews of the author of the book on monographs and collections of recent years devoted to the work of Brodsky. Andrey Ranchin is a Doctor of Philology, a leading researcher at the Institute of Scientific Information of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
