To what extent is today's Russia a consequence of everything that has happened on its long historical path? Could other development scenarios have been realized? How can we distinguish a real historical alternative from a myth? In this popular science book, Dmitry Travin seeks answers to questions that are relevant to the country, based on his many years of historical and sociological research. The author chooses a retrospective view of Russian history and retreats into the past step by step, making stops at those key points that most strongly influenced the fate of the country. The task he sets for himself is to trace how, at each stage of Russia's development, "trends coming from the past" clashed with or, conversely, combined with "trends generated by a new era." Dmitry Travin is a PhD candidate in economics, a specialist in economic history and historical sociology, and from 2008 to April 2024, he was the scientific director of the Center for Modernization Studies at the European University at St. Petersburg.
