Ivan Sergeevich Shmelev (1873-1950) is a Russian writer and Orthodox thinker, twice nominated for the Nobel Prize.

He worked on "The Heavenly Paths" for fifteen years, but due to his death, he never wrote the third volume. The novel is based on a real love story between engineer V. A. Veidengammer and a novice of the Passion Monastery, Daria Koroleva, who left the monastery for her lover. This meeting became a turning point for Victor, a religious skeptic who discovered a new, previously unknown spiritual world. Shmelev reveals how faith can transform a person, giving him the strength to overcome life's difficulties.
