Ivan Sergeevich Shmelev (1873-1950) - Russian writer and publicist, twice nominated for the Nobel Prize; nicknamed "Orthodox writer" for a large number of texts about the spirituality of the Russian people. While in exile, "not for a minute in his spiritual fervor does he stop thinking about Russia and being tormented by its misfortunes." The novel "Heavenly Paths", the idea of the third volume of which was never realized due to the death of the writer, reflects the real love story between the engineer V.A. Veidengammer and the novice of the Passion Monastery Darinka Koroleva, who left her monastery for him. Thanks to this meeting, the religious skeptic-positivist Viktor unexpectedly discovered a world previously unknown to him. Supported by a strong-spirited and sincere in her faith beloved, he was able to embark on the path of insight. The author naturally depicted the development of spiritual feeling, which began with the knowledge of the atonement of sin and repentance and led to the Source of life. The revelation of the fates and characters of the heroes was based on an ascetic worldview, the traditions of which were not inherent in the secular culture of the 19th-20th centuries.
