Anna Leonowens is an adventurer and suffragette. All her life she hid her age and the story of her origins, traveled with missionaries in Egypt and Palestine, opposed slavery, spent 6 years teaching in the harem of the King of Siam (Thailand) and went down in history as the most famous English governess, although she first visited Britain only at an advanced age.
Left a widow at the age of 28 with a young son and daughter in her arms, Anne opened a school in Singapore for the children of British officers. She soon received an invitation from the King of Siam to teach English to his 82 offspring and 39 wives. This is an eye-opening book about life in the palace, the harsh laws of the harem, and the culture and customs of Siam. In 1870, Anne published her memoirs of the mysterious Asian country where two kings rule, a white elephant is worshipped, and royal dead are cremated a year after their death. The tales of Siam struck a chord with her contemporaries, and the book immediately became a bestseller.
