The Pilgrim's Progress is Bunyan's most famous work, which he began writing during his first prison sentence and completed during his second.

The book is an allegorical journey of a Christian to the Celestial City. The Journey was an instant success, going through 11 editions during the author's lifetime and selling over 100,000 copies, and at one point was considered the most widely read book in the English language after the Bible.

Bunyan's work had a huge influence on the works of Swift, Thackeray, and Dickens (as well as Louisa May Alcott), and became iconic for many generations of Protestants.
