The first Russian publicistic work is a book by a high-ranking official who traveled 600 miles and became a dissident. A catalogue of Russian lawlessness and a reproach to the highest authorities, for which Radishchev went to Siberia.
"The Journey" is divided into chapters named after the post stations where the narrator changes horses. There is no single plot in the book: the structure, borrowed from the extremely popular "Sentimental Journey" by Laurence Sterne, allows the narrator to make excursions into the history, morals and customs of the places he passes through, and along the way to indulge in philosophical reflections on the structure of the state, law and morality, which are inspired by all new impressions and meetings.
"The Main Books of Russian Literature" is a joint series of the publishing house "Alpina.Proza" and the Internet project "Polka". The works that are published in it are selected by modern writers, critics, literary scholars, teachers. This is both an attempt to determine what the Russian literary canon looks like today and a new look at famous works: each book is accompanied by a detailed article by the authors of “The Shelf.”
