A Path Through the Forest. Of Mushrooms and Grief

Anthropologist Long Litt Woon, a native of Malaysia who lives and works in Norway, has combined in this book the story of her introduction to the world of mushrooms with a heartfelt confession of a woman who lost her husband and was forced to learn to live alone. Both parts of the text are autobiographical: the experience of grief and the search for refuge in a suddenly empty world led Long to the forest, prompting her to ask questions about what attracts people to mushrooms, how the relationship between the two kingdoms of living nature is built, what are the laws of the "silent hunt", what pleasures it promises and what dangers it conceals. The decision to go mushroom picking eventually led the author to acquire new competence - Long is now a member of the Norwegian Mycological Association - and culminated in a book in which juicy descriptions of forest walks, recipes for mushroom dishes and deep reflections on the life of a modern person searching for his place between civilization and nature coexist surprisingly organically.
