Thomas Hoving led the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1967 to 1977. During his ten years as director, he revolutionized one of the richest and most striking museums in the world. During his leadership, world masterpieces and major private collections were acquired, the building underwent its most extensive renovation ever, and the halls began exhibiting contemporary artists and hosting blockbuster exhibitions - among them, for example, an exhibition on Russian costume from the collections of Soviet museums. To lead the museum to such success, Hoving had to be, as he writes, a bit of a thug, an errand boy, a smuggler's sidekick, an anarchist and a sycophant. And so "the Metropolitan, once elitist, prim, gray, breathing on the incense, came to life. The mummies danced." This book is a fascinating account of how museum life works from the inside: how Hoving's relationships with curators and curators, collectors and trustees, and the American elite of the 1960s and 1970s. The book "Let the Mummies Dance. The Metropolitan Museum of Art from the Inside" is the second edition of the "Director's Series" of the Garage Museum of Modern Art, dedicated to the heads of the world's leading museums.
