Ivan Sergeevich Shmelev (1873-1950) was a Russian writer and publicist, twice nominated for the Nobel Prize. He was nicknamed the "Orthodox writer" for his numerous texts on Russian spirituality. While in exile, "not for a moment, in his spiritual fervor, did he cease to think about Russia and be tormented by its misfortunes."

The collection "Birds of God" includes the essay "On the Rocks of Valaam" (1897), Shmelev's first major work, short stories from various years, and memoirs.
