The name of the English writer Daphne du Maurier (1907-1989) is known throughout the world. During her long creative life, she published a dozen and a half novels, several collections of short stories, plays, biographies and a book about Cornwall, where she spent most of her life and where many of her stories unfold. But the writer's calling card forever became two works that inspired Alfred Hitchcock to create the eponymous film thrillers: the novel "Rebecca" and the short story "The Birds".

The collection of stories, later named after this famous short story, was published in 1952: six completely different, but equally fascinating stories that can be considered classic examples of du Maurier's original style. In addition to these works, which make up the author's collection, the publication also includes the story "Happy Christmas" (1940), which had not been translated into Russian for a long time.
