In his book "The Psychology of Socialism", G. Lebon examines socialism in political, economic and philosophical terms, placing special emphasis on the consideration of socialism as a belief, i.e. from the point of view of psychology. The author analyzes "the clash of socialist ideas with the reality of the existing social order, i.e., the clash of abstract ideas with the inexorable laws of nature." In his view, in order to understand the strength of modern socialism, it is necessary to view it predominantly as a belief, thus revealing the strong psychological reasons for its appeal. The central theme of the book is, to put it in modern terms, institutional dynamics: nations must inevitably submit to traditions and then be able to free themselves from them. Here the feelings and mental makeup of peoples play a decisive role: few peoples have had the flexibility to satisfy the twin conditions of changeability and sustainability. The economic part of the book is a rare document of the epoch: it describes the results of municipal socialism, which preceded centralized socialism, covering the whole country. According to the famous socialist Sorel, Lebon's book "is the most complete work published in France on socialism, deserving great attention for the originality of the author's ideas, suggestive of the most serious reflections".
