Orthodox people have long honored the Blessed Virgin Mary. They express their gratitude and love to the Mother of the Savior of mankind in prayers, akathistas, and prayer chants. The reverent love of the people moved St. Demetrius of Rostov (it is to him that the authorship of "folk hymnography" is unanimously attributed) to create a collection entirely devoted to praise in honor of the Intercessor of our Zealous Mother. For this prayer book the saint took as a prototype the Psalter of King David, which is why we traditionally call the prayers collected here hymns. Offered for home praise, of which Christian humility does not leave the spiritual father unaware, these psalms are capable of becoming a source of fervent penitential tears and, at the same time, of deep consolation, given as a pledge of the special intercession of Our Most Holy Mother the Theotokos. Accept, O All-Blessed and All-Powerful, Most Pure Lady, Our Lady, the Theotokos, these prayers, which we, Thy unworthy servants, offer to Thee now with tears, to Thy all-pervading image, as Thou Thyself Who art there, hearing our prayers, and granting with faith to those who ask, according to each one's petition, the fulfillment thereof.
