Ekaterina Mishanenkova is a historian and reconstructor, researcher of medieval life and manners, author of popular science books about the Middle Ages. What do we know about medieval cuisine? Imagination paints vivid pictures: in castles, whole roasted boar and deer carcasses are served, in Gothic halls dressed up lords and ladies sit, and from their goblets on the tablecloth spills red, like blood, wine. Conversely, influenced by stereotypes and costumed historical dramas, we often imagine the lives of ordinary people as a series of very sad scenes. Poor peasants munching on dry cakes or moldy bread, beggars crowding the church, begging for at least a crust from the fat prelate, and miserable lurkers in the castle kitchen spinning a spit with a deer, nearly starving themselves... But what was the culture of cooking and eating in the Middle Ages really like?
