Yulian Semyonovich Semyonov was a Russian writer, screenwriter, and journalist, the author of cult novels about Stierlitz, the legendary Soviet intelligence officer who became a true national hero. This edition presents his novel "The Standoff" (1979), which chronicles the work of the Moscow Criminal Investigation Department, led by Colonel Vladislav Kostenko. A gripping crime plot that veers from the present to the past, as well as the clash of complex and powerful personalities, sealed the fate of "The Standoff." The novel was recognized as one of Yulian Semyonov's finest works and enjoyed immense success with readers. In 1985, a TV series of the same name, directed by Semyon Aranovich, was released, starring Oleg Basilashvili and Andrei Boltnev, and written by Yulian Semyonov. Almost forty years later, a new film adaptation by Timur Alpatov was released, with Vladimir Vdovichenkov playing the role of Colonel Kostenko.
