Spanning the period between the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and the years immediately following World War I, this novel travels between labor unrest in Colorado and New York at the turn of the century, takes in London and Göttingen, Venice and Vienna, the Balkans, Central Asia, Siberia with its mysterious Tunguska event, Revolutionary Mexico, post-war Paris, silent-era Hollywood, and a couple of other places that, strictly speaking, aren't even on maps.
In just a few years, a global catastrophe will ensue, while for now, rampant corporate greed, phony piety, foolish carelessness, and ill-intentioned behavior reign supreme. No references to the present day were intended, and none should be sought.
The impressive cast includes anarchists, balloonists, gamblers, corporate tycoons, avid pharmacists, simpletons and decadents, mathematicians, mad scientists, shamans, clairvoyants and magicians, spies, detectives, adventurers, and hired guns. Nikola Tesla, Bela Lugosi, and Groucho ("The Grouch") Marx make striking cameo appearances.
These characters are mostly trying to simply live their lives as the era of certainty crumbles around them and an unpredictable future dawns. Sometimes they manage to keep up with life; sometimes, it chases them.
Meanwhile, the author is back to his old ways. The characters abandon their pursuits to sing mostly silly songs. Strange everyday practices occur. They speak in obscure languages, and not always idiomatically. Accidents happen that contradict the facts. This may not be the world as it is, but it would be so with a few minor adjustments. Some believe this is one of the purposes of fiction.
Let the reader decide, and let the reader beware. Good luck."
