The Innocents Abroad: The New Pilgrims' Progress is a humorous account of Mark Twain's "pleasure tour of Europe and the Holy Land" on board the transatlantic steamship Quaker City, which departed from New York in the summer of 1867. The Innocents Abroad combines a brilliant gift for storytelling, an ability to laugh at himself and the world, a "naive" and unprejudiced view of history, poetry, and irony, making it a huge success among readers who were already familiar with it from Twain's hilariously funny travel notes, which he sent to American newspapers during his epic five-month journey. The Innocents Abroad has been hailed as one of the best travel books ever written, and became Mark Twain's most published work during his lifetime. The current edition contains more than two hundred drawings, the majority of which were made by Mark Twain's contemporary, American artist Truman Williams. According to critics, Williams, who became the first illustrator of many of Mark Twain's books, including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, conveyed the spirit of the author's works better than anyone else.
