"A Farewell to Arms!" is a novel about love during wartime, about the desire to live and be loved against all odds.

It's World War I. American Frederick Henry volunteers for the Italian army. He's a lieutenant in the medical corps and barely sees the war. His monotonous daily routine is broken up by get-togethers with his comrades, drinking bouts, and trips to the officers' brothel. One day, Frederick's friend and roommate, the surgeon Rinaldi, introduces him to the nurses at a British hospital. He decides to pursue one of them, the Englishwoman Catherine Barkley, but she shows more sympathy for Frederick. Catherine is a fellow volunteer; her fiancé died in France. Their mutual interest—partly born of loneliness and emotional trauma—gradually develops into a love affair.

After being wounded by shelling, Henry is hospitalized with a severe leg wound. He is evacuated from the front lines and taken to a field hospital, from where he is then transferred to Milan, where he will undergo surgery and rehabilitation. In Milan, Frederick is assigned to a newly opened American hospital, where Catherine Barkley is also transferred. They are reunited, and it turns out that they have very serious feelings for each other, but their relationship must be hidden from others.

Returning to the front, Henry witnesses and participates in the disastrous Italian retreat from Caporetto, but is unable to escape; military police arrest him for desertion. Seeing no other choice, Frederick jumps into the water and, in hiding, reaches Milan. He has decided to end the war once and for all. In Milan, he is reunited with Catherine, finding short-lived happiness.
