This collection presents a large body of documents on the history of Russian policy in the Caucasus in the first half of the 19th century. This period saw the annexation of Transcaucasia and the North Caucasus. While the Transcaucasian lands became part of the Russian Empire following successful wars with Turkey and Persia, in the North Caucasus, Russia faced a fundamentally different enemy, which dictated the lengthy period of its penetration into the region. Russian military and political thought in the first half of the 19th century focused on resolving this complex problem.
The book includes over a hundred drafts, notes, reports, and dissenting opinions on this topic. Many of these were published in both pre-revolutionary and Soviet collections, while some were discovered in the modern era. A number of documents from Russian archives (the State Historical Museum, the Russian State Library, and the Russian State Military Historical Archives) are being published for the first time. The publication is timed to coincide with the 160th anniversary of the end of the Caucasian War and is of great interest to both the scholarly community and the general public.
