A novel that has become a kind of symbol of Franz Kafka's work. Interestingly, Kafka did not leave any clues that could somehow reconstruct the plot of the novel. The chapters were not numbered and were contained in separate envelopes. Josef K. is a rational hero in the midst of an absurd society. His unremarkable, even somewhat banal life was going his way until he was informed that a trial had been initiated against him ... The absurdity of what is happening to K. is frightening precisely because of its down-to-earth, cold ordinariness, everydayness and even strange logicality of the horror happening to the hero, which he is unable to resist. Where is the judge, whom he has never seen? Where is the high court he never made it to? He is guilty simply because every man in this life can be guilty of something ... The scary and ridiculously funny atmosphere of "The Trial" is stunningly accurately conveyed by Orson Welles in his famous film adaptation starring Anthony Perkins, Jeanne Moreau and Romy Schneider.
