Ernst Jünger was always interested in the paradoxes of material existence and the problems of human loneliness in industrial society. These themes were reflected in "The Problem of Aladdin" - an allegorical, philosophical and poetic novel belonging to the late period of the author's work.
In search of a better life, a soldier from East Germany, Friedrich Baro deserted to the West and by the will of circumstances begins to engage in the funeral business. Business gradually picks up, and Friedrich realizes that he has become part of a large commercial enterprise that degrades the dignity of the deceased and turns him into an elementary unit of statistics. Baro is close to insanity, money does not bring him joy, unsolvable for him becomes, as he calls it, "Aladdin's problem": possessing enormous power, Baro can not find the right use for it...
