On a hot day in 1919, a young soldier, saving his life, kills a chasing rider on a white horse. From this meeting, without witnesses, only a painful memory and an image that haunts the hero all his life, until years later, working in Paris as a journalist, he reads a story that reproduces the story in detail from the point of view of the victim. Thus begins the quest for the elusive Alexander Wolf, which leads the narrator to a series of strange encounters and events that force him to reflect on life, death, fateful coincidences and the inevitability of fate.
In the novel “The Return of the Buddha”, the reader is waiting for the same Paris of Russian emigration: alleys of urban slums, memories, dizzying fantasies, a poor student, a mysterious homeless man who became a millionaire thanks to an unexpected inheritance, his young lover and the only witness to the murder – a golden statuette of Buddha.
Gazdanov masterfully intertwines autobiography, psychology and traditions of European existentialism with elements of adventure prose, philosophical thriller and detective.
