In his first experience in the field of historical prose - the novel "The Prince and the Beggar" (1877-1880, publ. 1881) - American writer Mark Twain skillfully weaves the old literary motif of mixed up twins (memorable to everyone for "The Comedy of Errors" and "Twelfth Night" Shakespeare) in the canvass of English history XVI century. On the same day in London, two boys are born who resemble each other like two drops of water: in the royal palace Edward Tudor, Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VI of England, whose birth is celebrated by the whole country, and in a miserable hovel of the Court of Scum, behind the Gluttony Row - the son of a thief and a beggar Tom Kentie, in whose family no one is happy about the addition. A few years later they temporarily change places by chance, and soon the little beggar, because of the death of the old king, gets a unique opportunity to rule the whole state, and the young prince receives lesson after lesson from his poorest subjects ...
