Baron Karl Friedrich Hieronymus von Munchausen was a real person. He lived in Germany in the 18th century, served in the Russian Empire, and even participated in the Russo-Turkish War and the siege and storming of Ochakov. Munchausen was a cheerful storyteller and an inimitable fantasist. In 1786, Rudolf Erich Raspe compiled all the stories he knew about the baron into a book titled "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen." The folk fame of these stories outlived their protagonist and has reached us, 21st-century readers.

Thanks to K. I. Chukovsky's retelling, Munchausen became Munchausen and firmly established himself as an essential fairytale character—friends of Russian children. The charismatic and fearless Baron
Munchausen, who told astonishing, almost fantastical stories about himself, was challenged by one of the most prominent contemporary artists, Maxim Mitrofanov. He worked on the character of Munchausen for several years. As a result, Munchausen's incredible adventures were enriched with witty details: the result was a masterpiece of a book, with an original artistic solution on every page.
