Hans Lothar von Schweinitz (1822-1901) was the German ambassador to the Russian Empire from 1876 to 1892. Thus, he remained on the banks of the Neva River throughout almost the entire reign of Alexander III. He witnessed the choice of a new course in Russian domestic policy, the dramatic deterioration of relations with Germany and the first steps towards a Russian-French alliance. In his diary, Schweinitz not only describes important events in which he was a direct participant, but also shares his observations and reflections on the present and future of Russia.
