This book is an author's project by the remarkable St. Petersburg artist Mikhail Bychkov, whose illustrations help us to visualize more vividly and concretely the world of one of the most significant novels by F. M. Dostoevsky. The novel "Crime and Punishment" (1866) had a tremendous impact on the development of Russian and world literature. It was conceived as a "psychological account of a single crime," but the writer far departed from the original plans. "Crime and Punishment" puts before the reader the most important moral and attitudinal questions about faith, conscience, sin and redemption through suffering and unfolds as a grand philosophical study of human nature, as a Christian tragedy about the death and resurrection of the soul. "The atmosphere of a novel is often more important than the specific scenes. The feeling of hopelessness, tragedy of existence I carried through all the illustrations", - writes M. Bychkov.
