The novels Crime and Punishment and The Idiot, along with The Imp, The Teenager and The Brothers Karamazov, are part of F.M. Dostoevsky's so-called "five books": their role in world literature has been compared in importance to the first five books of the Bible - the Pentateuch of Moses. Deeply social and at the same time treating fundamental questions of existence, these novels have changed our ideas about the possibilities of literature and the nature of man in many ways. The first of these great works by Dostoevsky was the novel Crime and Punishment (1866). It was conceived as a "psychological account of a single crime," but the writer departed far from the original plans, forcing the reader to reflect on sin and redemption, on the limits of the permissible, on spiritual death and resurrection. The main idea of the novel "The Idiot" (1868) Dostoevsky formulated as follows: "...to portray a positively beautiful man. Harder than this there is nothing in the world, and especially now". "Prince-Christ" comes out to preach, and in his words Dostoevsky puts his cherished thoughts about the Russian soul and faith.
