"Crime and Punishment" is one of the most famous, integral and profound works of Dostoevsky. The text of this drama was first published in a magazine version in 1866, and a year later came out as a separate book. Curiously, the novel immediately attracted the attention not only of the entire Russian reading public, but also of foreign criminalists, who admired the subtle analysis of the psychology of the criminal described in this work. To put it in modern terms, Dostoevsky, with the help of the artist's amazingly subtle flair, studies in him the innate programs of behavior, which support only very weak barriers that keep a person from criminal actions. And yet these barriers are real, their quiet voice we call conscience. Like Dante, Dostoevsky together with his characters descends into the hell of dark movements of the human soul, but he behaves not as an impartial researcher, but as a Christian, ready to understand and accept the torments of his characters. This is one of the reasons for the success of Crime and Punishment, for Dostoevsky speaks to his readers in a heartfelt way about the most important thing in this novel - the moral foundations of the individual, whether they are real or artificial. This edition of the novel completes a short essay on Dostoevsky's work. Its author Akim Lvovich Volynsky (literary pseudonym of Chaim Flexler) was a prominent Russian art historian and literary critic of the late 19th century. The illustrations to the novel, which well convey both the urban atmosphere of St. Petersburg in the last third of the 19th century and the complex world of the characters in the drama, were made by Olga Andreyevna Rusakova. She was born in St. Petersburg, graduated from the Faculty of Design of the Finnish University of Applied Sciences Kymenlaakso and interned at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Faculty of Fine Arts. She has participated in international illustration and wall art competitions. She participated in the design of the editions of "Alice in Wonderland" and "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen", published by the publishing house "SZKEO". She also made illustrations for Marina Tsvetaeva's collection of poems "Evening Album", published by the same publishing house in 2018.
