The French novelist and playwright Auguste Macquet (1813–1888) collaborated with Dumas the father for a long time, helping him work on many famous novels. Macke was also the author of his own works. His novel La Belle Gabrielle is a continuation of Dumas's famous trilogy about the Huguenot wars, which ended with the novel Forty-Five. Macke's bright adventure novel, in which the main character is Henry IV's mistress Gabrielle d'Estrées, became the logical finale of Dumas' trilogy. In it, readers will meet characters they already know. The pre-revolutionary translation edited by SZKEO in this edition is decorated with illustrations by French artists, allowing one to visualize the flavor of that era.
In the famous Parisian cemetery Père Lachaise, on one of the tall tombstones, in a round medallion, there is a bust of a man with a high forehead and a piece of paper in his hands. On the left, the names of famous novels are carved into the stone: “The Musketeers”, “Twenty Years Later”, “Monte Cristo”, “Queen Margot”. However, this is not a monument to Alexandre Dumas. Below are completely different dates of life and death: 1813–1888. Here lies the ashes of his faithful assistant and talented novelist Auguste Macquet. The future writer was born in Paris and was educated at the famous Lyceum of Charlemagne. Macke showed his talents early. At the age of 18 he became a professor of history and was left as a teacher at the Lyceum, which he had just graduated from. However, the dry listing of names and dates from the pulpit did not greatly captivate the capable young man. His friends at the Lyceum were the poets Théophile Gautier and Gerard de Nerval, and they lived in completely different spheres, living exclusively in literature. When Mac turned 25, he tried his hand at fiction and wrote a play. It turned out to be clearly weak for production, and then Nerval showed it to Dumas, with whom he was familiar. He went through the text with the master’s hand, the play began to sparkle with completely new colors, and in 1839 its premiere took place at the Renaissance Theater. Thus began the literary collaboration of the great Dumas and professor of history Macke. Auguste rummaged through the archives, looked for dates, names, facts, and brought Dumas entire pieces of chapters he had written. The elder Dumas rewrote a lot of things in his own way, bringing a breath of life into Macke’s texts. On the covers of published novels only the name of Dumas appeared. Macke remained in the shadows. He participated in the creation of such novels as “The Three Musketeers”, “The Countess de Monsoreau”, “The Vicomte de Bragelonne” and some others. The details of the financial relations between the two writers are not exactly known, but after the death of Dumas the father, Macke wrote to his son that “... there were never financial misunderstandings between your father and me.” However, in 1851, Macke sued Dumas, demanding full co-authorship, but the court ruled in favor of Dumas. Communication with the great writer benefited Auguste Mackay. Working alongside him, he went through an excellent literary school and became the author of several fascinating novels and plays. His novel La Belle Gabrielle, in which the main character is the mistress of Henry IV, is a continuation of Dumas's famous trilogy about the Huguenot wars. It was as if Macke had picked up the maestro’s baton and carried it further. After reading the fascinating novel “La Belle Gabrielle,” you can try on the role of a literary critic and compare Macke’s texts with any chapter from Dumas’ famous novels.
