19.99 €
This book is dedicated to everyday life in Japan as depicted in traditional ukiyo-e woodblock prints. Urban planning, trade and entertainment, religious festivals and holidays, food and education—the publication explores various aspects of Japanese society. These prints offer insights into the structure of Japan's largest cities, the everyday living conditions of the Japanese people, entertainment, and, in general, into the things and phenomena that were common and taken for granted by urban dwellers. The prints were created by renowned artists of the Edo period.

Many aspects of everyday life in Japan in the 18th and 19th centuries are reflected in Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints. This art form flourished from the 1680s, and for hundreds of years, individual sheets, albums, and books illustrated with these prints were exceptionally popular among the urban population. The tens of thousands of images that have survived to this day constitute a unique visual resource. Prints allow us to expand our knowledge of the structure of Japan's largest cities, the everyday living conditions of the Japanese, their entertainment, and, in general, the things and phenomena that were common and taken for granted for city dwellers during the Edo period (1603-1868). Europeans who visited the closed country were invariably amazed by the unusual and unfamiliar way of life its citizens led. The Edo period takes its name from the city of Edo—now known worldwide as Tokyo, the capital of Japan.
