"The Turn of the Screw" is one of Henry James's most famous works and an important text in the history of English literature. The story combines elements of Gothic, psychological analysis and subtle literary play with the reader.

Henry James's father was interested in spiritualism, and his brother studied the occult sciences - an interest in the supernatural was their family trait. But the writer created the story "The Turn of the Screw" at the request of the editor of Collier's Weekly after the failure of his play.

The owner of a mysterious estate hires a young governess to look after his nephew and niece, insisting that he not be disturbed on any issues. Charmed by him, the girl agrees to all the conditions and confidently takes on the job. But her charges behave strangely, and the ominous figures of the former governess and valet flicker in the darkness. Are these ghosts or a figment of her imagination?
