Boris Nikolaevich Polevoy (1908–1981) was a famous Soviet writer, screenwriter, and journalist, winner of state prizes, and author of the legendary “Story of a Real Man,” which has been reprinted dozens of times and translated into many languages.

The “Story” is based on the amazing fate of the Soviet ace pilot Alexei Petrovich Maresyev, whose life became an example of courage, unbending will, and fortitude.

Polevoy, as a correspondent for the Pravda newspaper, went through the Great Patriotic War and collected a wealth of factual material. He met the famous pilot in August 1943, and the writer wrote down his story in the “Flight Diary of the 3rd Squadron.” Three years later, Polevoy returned to his “Diary” and in a few weeks created a book about the feat of the legless pilot.

"The Tale" was published in 1946 and brought the author nationwide love and fame, and just two years later a feature film was made based on it with Pavel Kadochnikov in the leading role and an opera of the same name by Sergei Prokofiev was staged.

The illustrations for this edition were drawn by the remarkable St. Petersburg artist Mikhail Bychkov.
