Boris Nikolaevich Polevoy (1908–1981) was a renowned Soviet novelist, screenwriter, and journalist, winner of state prizes, and author of the legendary "Story of a Real Man," which has seen dozens of editions and been translated into many languages.

The "Story" is based on the remarkable life of Soviet ace pilot Alexei Petrovich Maresyev, whose life became an example of courage, unwavering will, and perseverance. As a correspondent for the newspaper Pravda, Polevoy served during the Great Patriotic War and collected a wealth of factual material. He met the celebrated pilot in August 1943, and recorded his account in his "Flight Diary of the 3rd Squadron." Three years later, Polevoy returned to his "Diary" and, in just a few weeks, created a book about the legless pilot's heroic exploits. The story was published in 1946 and brought the author national love and fame, and just two years later a feature film was made based on it, starring Pavel Kadochnikov, and an opera of the same name by Sergei Prokofiev was staged.
