The plot of “The Tale of a Real Man” is based on real events that occurred with the pilot Alexei Maresyev during the Great Patriotic War (in the name of his hero, the writer changed one letter). His plane, which shot the entire ammunition, took four enemy fighters into ticks. The pilot tried to escape from the ticks, but the machine gun queue still got the engine. He struggled to pull a plane losing altitude to his territory until he crashed into the tops of the trees. The pilot was seriously wounded; for eighteen days, hungry, frostbitten, he crawled to his own, until the children of the partisans found him. Then the hospital, amputation of both legs. But after a year and a half Maresyev again sat at the helm of the aircraft, and the fighter. Remaining a cripple, he still rushed into the sky, into battle. And he won.
