"The Tale of a Chekist" by Viktor Mikhailov was published in 1965. The writer-Chekist wrote this book based on documentary materials. The story centers on the fate of Nikolai Geft. A German by origin, a talented ship repair engineer, he was sent by the NKVD to occupied Odessa. Geft managed to gain the trust of the Germans and create an underground group that successfully worked for Victory, against the Germans, for at least a year.

The novel describes in a gripping style how Geft unraveled the operations of German counterintelligence, how he disguised mines as coal, destroying German ships. ... In the 1960s, Viktor Mikhailov's novel caused a sensation - and not only in the USSR. No one could imagine how bravely and effectively the Odessa underground worked during the Great Patriotic War, fighting against fascism, for the freedom of our Motherland.

Today this book is a classic that should be read by anyone interested in the history of the Great Patriotic War and who loves stories about intelligence officers - real heroes.
