This book explores the survival strategies and struggles of the Ural region's population during the Revolution, Civil War, and mass famine. The key idea of the monograph is that the region's population at the epicenter of the Civil War—eyewitnesses, willing and unwilling participants—were simultaneously co-authors and victims of those severe upheavals. Within the monograph, you will encounter Red and White rulers, corrupt officials, jubilant demonstrators, enraged crowds of citizens, hordes of hungry peasants, and even the devil himself.

Igor Vladimirovich Narsky, Doctor of Historical Sciences and Professor at Perm State National Research University, founded and headed the Center for Cultural and Historical Research at South Ural State University from 2004 to 2014. His research interests include the cultural history of everyday life, visuality, corporeality, experience, feelings, memory, and materiality within the framework of the late Russian Empire, the Russian Revolution, and the USSR; and the methodology of history. His publications in Russian, German, English, Italian, and other languages reveal the mysteries of the history of the Russian Revolution, Soviet everyday life, visual images, and commemorative practices.
