Alistair MacLean (1922–1987) was a British writer, author of 28 action novels and adventure stories, and screenwriter. His name is widely known to readers worldwide. MacLean's books have sold over 150 million copies, and 18 films have been based on his novels, screenplays, and plots. In 1983, the University of Glasgow awarded him a Doctor of Literature degree.
The collection's flagship, "The Last Frontier," is a spy thriller set during the Cold War. A British secret agent confronts the Hungarian secret police while on a mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist, his compatriot. In 1961, the novel was adapted into a film under the title "Secret Paths."
The war thriller "Partisans" takes us back to World War II. Major Petersen and his team cross Yugoslavia to deliver a secret message and expose a double agent operating within a partisan unit.
"South of Java" is a spy, naval, and adventure novel set in 1942, immediately after the fall of Singapore. A motley group of fugitives flees the burning city aboard a decrepit cargo ship under the command of a captain with a rather dubious reputation...
